What is Mental Health First Aid?

Just as physical first aid helps someone until an ambulance arrives, Mental Health First Aid gives you the skills to support someone until professional help is available or the crisis passes. It’s a practical, evidence-based program designed for everyday people — no clinical background needed.

The Standard Mental Health First Aid course is a nationally recognised, two-day program. On completion you earn a Mental Health First Aider accreditation valid for three years. We deliver it locally so your team, club or community group can get accredited without the cost and time of travelling to Adelaide.

What a Mental Health First Aid course covers

The course is built around the MHFA ALGEE action plan — a simple framework you can remember and use when it counts.

  1. A

Approach, assess & assist with any crisis

How to start the conversation, judge the situation, and act if someone is at immediate risk.

  2. L

    Listen & communicate non-judgementally

Practical listening skills that help someone feel heard rather than fixed or dismissed.

  3. G

    Give support & information

How to offer reassurance and share useful, accurate information without giving advice you’re not qualified to give.

  4. E

    Encourage appropriate professional help

Knowing the options — GP, psychologist, helplines — and how to gently encourage someone to reach out.

  5. E

    Encourage other supports

Family, friends, self-help strategies and community connection that aid recovery.

You’ll walk away able to

  • Recognise the early signs and symptoms of common mental health problems
  • Have a confident, supportive conversation with someone who’s struggling
  • Respond safely in a crisis, including thoughts of suicide
  • Guide someone toward professional help and other support
  • Look after your own wellbeing while supporting others
